A youth soccer game in Wichita turned into a devastating tragedy after a pickup truck drove onto a soccer field at Stryker Sports Complex, killing a 6-year-old boy and a 35-year-old man and injuring 10 other people.
The crash occurred at approximately 3:25 p.m. on Saturday, October 17, at the sports complex on North Greenwich Road in northeast Wichita. Families had gathered to watch children play when the vehicle entered the field and struck several people, prompting an emergency response involving police officers, firefighters and paramedics.
Authorities identified the two people killed as Cole Adrian, 6, and Nicholas Schafer, 35, both from McPherson, Kansas. Police said the victims were not related.
The incident has left families grieving and shaken a community that had gathered for an ordinary afternoon of youth sports.
How the Wichita Soccer Accident Happened
According to the Wichita Police Department, preliminary findings indicate that a Chevrolet pickup driven by a 34-year-old woman was parked in a space near the soccer fields before it drove onto one of the fields and struck multiple children and adults.
Police said two of the driver’s children were inside the pickup at the time of the crash. Another of her children was playing soccer on a different field at the complex.
Emergency crews arrived and began treating injured people, while witnesses and bystanders also rushed to help those who had been struck.
The crash caused widespread disruption at the complex, where soccer activities were cancelled as investigators examined the scene and gathered evidence.
Authorities have not publicly established why the truck entered the field or whether the incident resulted from a medical emergency, mechanical failure or another cause.
Two Victims Identified
The deaths of Cole Adrian and Nicholas Schafer have brought particular sadness to their hometown of McPherson.
Adrian was only six years old, with his life still beginning. Schafer, 35, was also killed in the collision. Their deaths have left loved ones and members of the wider community facing an unexpected loss.
Officials have expressed condolences to both families and to everyone affected by the tragedy.
The incident also affected children and adults who witnessed the crash or rushed to help. For many families at the complex, what began as a routine sporting event became a frightening and painful experience.
Ten People Injured
Police confirmed that 10 other people were injured in the crash and transported to local hospitals. Their ages ranged from five to 68, and five of the injured victims were children.
The injuries were described as noncritical in the initial police announcement, although reports indicated that some victims had sustained serious injuries.
An additional 61-year-old woman was taken to hospital after experiencing medical complications unrelated to traumatic injuries from the collision.
Emergency responders worked to provide medical care and transport those affected to nearby facilities.
Driver Released as Investigation Continues
The 34-year-old driver was initially taken into custody following the crash. After investigators interviewed witnesses and consulted with the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office, she was released pending toxicology results and a mechanical examination of the vehicle.
As of the latest official update available, no criminal charges had been filed.
Investigators have conducted numerous witness interviews and are examining vehicle evidence to determine the circumstances that led to the crash. Police have also asked members of the public to provide relevant photographs or videos that could assist the investigation.
Authorities have cautioned against spreading unverified claims about the driver or the cause of the incident while the investigation remains active.
Community Responds to the Tragedy
The crash prompted an outpouring of concern from Wichita residents and the surrounding community. Wichita Mayor Lily Wu expressed heartbreak over the deaths, particularly the loss of a young child, and offered support to the affected families.
The Stryker Sports Complex cancelled events following the incident, while other sporting activities in the area were disrupted as authorities responded.
The tragedy has also highlighted the emotional impact such incidents can have on young athletes, families, witnesses and first responders. Community members have been encouraged to seek support if they are struggling to process what happened.
Investigation Remains Ongoing
Police continue working to determine why the pickup truck drove onto the soccer field and what factors may have contributed to the collision. Toxicology testing, vehicle examinations and witness accounts are expected to help investigators establish a clearer picture of the events.
Until those findings are released, the precise cause of the crash remains undetermined.
For the families of Cole Adrian and Nicholas Schafer, however, the consequences are already irreversible. A day intended for children to play soccer and families to spend time together ended in tragedy, leaving two families grieving and a community searching for answers.
The investigation remains active, and officials have said additional information will be released when it can be confirmed.
