A 31-year-old man from Waynesboro died early Sunday after a vehicle crash during a pursuit involving the Georgia State Patrol, authorities said.
The man, identified as Tom Ellison, was taken to Wellstar MCG Health Medical Center after the crash at the intersection of Doug Bernard Parkway and Dixon Airline Road in Augusta. He was pronounced dead at 12:28 a.m., according to information provided by the coroner’s office.
Authorities said the vehicle was being pursued by Georgia State Patrol troopers when a Precision Immobilization Technique, commonly known as a PIT maneuver, was initiated. The maneuver is used by law enforcement to stop a fleeing vehicle by making controlled contact with it.
The circumstances surrounding the pursuit and the events immediately preceding the crash had not been fully detailed in the initial report.
